PM Modi surpasses Indira Gandhi with 12 consecutive Independence Day addresses from Red Fort

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 79th Independence Day with his 12th consecutive address from the Red Fort, surpassing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s record of 11 straight speeches. This achievement now places Modi second only to Jawaharlal Nehru, who delivered 17 Independence Day speeches in a row during his tenure as India’s first prime minister.

Indira Gandhi, who served as prime minister between 1966–1977 and 1980–1984, delivered a total of 16 August 15 addresses, with 11 of them being consecutive. Nehru remains the longest-serving leader to address the nation from the Red Fort, followed by Modi in the consecutive speeches tally.

In his tenure, Modi has used the annual address to outline key policy decisions, national achievements, and future goals. Last year, he not only broke Manmohan Singh’s 10-year consecutive streak but also delivered the longest-ever Independence Day speech at 98 minutes.
